Post subject: The OfficeRoundtable Week 3 - How Long Can It Go? PostPosted: Wed Oct 22, 2008 7:50 am

Welcome to week 3 of The Office Roundtable! I hope you all have had a chance to read and weigh-in on last week's topic.

If you have any topics you'd like to see explored please post your ideas here.

Now, on to this week's topic:

Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant's original version of The Office ran for 12 episodes and a two-part special. They essentially ended the series on their own terms the way they wanted. So far the US version has 5 seasons and 69 episodes. This week's topic is...

Do you think that the US version will end under on it's own terms or will it fizzle out and be cancelled?

Secondaty topic!

If you think it should end on it's own terms when do you think it should? And what would you like to see happen?

I can't discuss this topic without weeping uncontrollably over my keyboard. Give me some time to wipe away the tears, buy a new keyboard, and think about it.

Haha...good one

Well, There is something to be said about going out on top, like Seinfeld did. It is kinda sad when a show starts sputtering and then peters out. So, I say let it end on its own terms. When?....5-6 seasons from now. What happens, I don't really have an agenda, just keep the humor up and abundant.

For me the most important thing is that they keep the integrity of the show. I don't want to see Angela dating Jim in a few years just for shock value, you know? It would be totally implausible. And I agree with chadgar24, it's important that they keep it funny. I think there'll be a time when some of the actors and/or writers want to move on, and that's natural. As much as I'd love for this show to go on forever, all good things must come to an end eventually. In hindsight I would rather Veronica Mars have ended in season 2 then sold out to the CW & caved to corporate pressure to make the show into another One Tree Hill. That was a dark, intelligent show that probably had more 40 year old viewers than 14 year old viewers. They should have been smart enough to see that.

Sorry, I digress Wink I think they have at least another 2 solid years in them.

Thats the good thing about a show like LOST. They've given themselves a timeframe to wrap things up. Although since The Office is supposed to be a documentary and technically you could keep it going for as long as you want just with different characters.

Mark my words, the show is over after Season 7.

I think a few more seasons. At least 2 more after this. I would hate to see it fizzle out.

I wonder if they would be better off as the story goes to let characters go for good that have run the course. Like Jan, she is due to go, although you just get the feeling holly will end up leaving and jan will continue on the show. Even Ryan, they should of just let him be in jail.

I agree with chadgar going out on top, like Seinfeld did would be best.

I'd rather see The Office go on forever, but I think it'd be better if they ended on their own terms than be canceled. There's no way of knowing how long it will go on (That's what she said) I can see it going on for quite some time after season 5. I don't think it'll be on for 10 years, but possibly 9. I know for a fact that there will never be a better show. Very Happy

I definitely don't see it going into the double digit seasons. Carell is a big star who seems to have a couple of movies out each year, and John and Rainn are getting more movie roles which will start to complicate things, and they'll all probably want to move on eventually. I'd say probably around season 7 or 8 they'll call it. But hey, that's like what, 60-80 more episodes? Very Happy

The one thing that could potentially keep a show like this going is bringing in new characters. Like say if Steve Carrell decides to leave the show...well someone else has to be Regional Manager so why not bring in someone new? It probably wouldn't have the same vibe to it but it's rather realistic. Because if you end it Steve were to leave it would kind of make the documentary seem like it was all about Michael Scott being a boss and not as much of a look at the workplace.

I always thought it would be cool if in the last episode everyone that still worked at Dunder Mifflin were in the confrence room or at a restaraunt like Chili's and they watched the series premier of the documentary about them and when it started it would be the beginning of the Pilot that we saw when the Office first started.

Ha ha, that would be fantastic. As much as I love the show, I feel that it is starting to have run its course. I think this next season would probably be enough to finish it off.

I would hate to see the show go on without any of the main cast. Main characters leaving and addition of characters, especially to be main ones, usually shows that a show doesn't have it anymore, ex: Happy Days, Growing Pains, Becker, Brady Bunch. Granted these may not be the most recent or most significant shows, but I've seen what this tactic has done to those shows and it's awful. Look where Scrubs is going now without Braff. Might as well be a spin off. Bringing in new characters, keeping the show going with being about DM and not Michael Scott would be realistic, this is television we're talking about. It's not realistic. Nothing on TV is realistic. Not even "reality TV" Wink

Shows like Seinfeld, Frasier, Raymond, and Cheers that maintained their core throughout the series had great success. If Carell left, the show would definitely have to end. If Krasinski, Wilson or Fischer left the show (I personally don't think Novak has ever been a "main" character) I don't know that the show would have to end, but something would definitely be lacking and would probably spell the beginning of the end. I hope the writers and producers would realize that and not try to make it a cash cow. I think the writers/producers have enough integrity/awareness not to do that. This is the only current show that I watch, and I have never been this "in" to a show in my life. I hope it goes out on top.

As for how it will end...I don't know about character storylines, but I see either Scranton getting downsized or the documentary crew closing up shop. I think it would be cool, as others have said, for the employees to watch what has been video taped for so long, something like that has to happen eventually. If they're downsized, I think it would be nice for every character to have a talking head to talk about their experience at DM and maybe the ending tag have everyone leaving with their classic office culture cardboard box of things, and then a pause after everyone's left and have Creed do something Creed-like to end it. Who knows. I just love The Office. Very Happy

i fear that the show will end to soon. I think they should quit when 2 of the following characters leave: Michael dwight jim. That would be a reason for me to stop watching.

I think a way to end the show is when some of the characters are retirering ( creed and stanley )

the best scenario: Dunder mifflin scranton is sold to staples and the cast/employees are either fired or quit or retire leaving the documentary-makers nothing left to go on with and they leave with a heartbreaking goodbye where michael is sending everybody off and him closing the door and turning of the lights for the last time.

also a less emotional scenario is: they could have ryan and dwight burn down the whole building in a fight.

One thing I hope they won't try and keep the show going with a new cast or make a spin-off. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

the u.s. office show is immensely profitable; thus it will not be ended intentionally, the creators will be under pressure to keep profits high. but it may be cancelled if they cant reign in the racial punchlines like what is said about darrel in "job fair" episode of season four.

I just re-found this. I know I already posted but...

Thinking about the show ending is too much for me to think about so I won't. I would absolutely hate for the show to fizzle out, it's got such amazing actors/actresses and writing team. Unfortunately the show hasn't really been like it's old self. Are there new writers? I noticed that Ryan is appearing again, so is he also writing still? But Toby and Kelly write and they're always on the show, so I don't know. Maybe it's because Pam is pregnant but she is definitely not her old self. Like for example a few episodes ago Jim made a joke and Pam's response was "Alright..." like "Stop that!" Anyway, strayed off course.. I would hate for the office to close and have Michael turn out the lights and lock the door, that would be way too emotional! I would love for the last episode to be Michael and Holly's wedding, OR Holly to have children with Michael after their wedding. That would be perfect to me. I can deff. see them going on for 8 season but it would be pushing it after that I think. Hopefully not though. Sad It will be missed, much missed.
